Leona Lewis is cracking under the pressure of dealing with her newly-found superstar life

To all of us, Leona Lewis has been a wonderful musical revelation, living proof of the fact that the "rags to riches" fairy tales we once used to hear at bedtime do sometimes come true. A short few years ago, Lewis was working as a receptionist and part-time waitress to help pay for recording sessions in a London studio. The present, however, is an entirely different affair, as Leona is on her way to becoming America’s new sweetheart - and with Simon Cowell and RCA Records boss Clive Davis in her corner, nothing seems to be standing in the way. However, the superstar life is said to be taking its toll on the modest and soft-spoken Leona, who has been plagued by chronic tonsillitis brought on by stress and is said to be in danger of losing her voice on that account.

Leona Lewis tops US pop charts

It’s been a long time since a British woman topped the US pop charts, but Leona Lewis’ amazing voice, passionate stage presence and her modest, unaffected behavior seem to have done the trick. The British soul diva won the hearts of her American audience and as a result, her first single, "Bleeding Love", hit number one in the US pop charts. The last British pop star to achieve the prestigious position was Kim Wilde, who topped the charts in 1987 with a version of The Supremes hit "You Keep Me Hangin’ On". Lewis, who won Britain’s most popular talent show "The X Factor", the British version of "American Idol", gained widespread acknowledgment in the States and is now headed towards a prodigious career on both sides of the Atlantic.

For some unknown reason, Kim Kardashian thinks that she’s some sort of internationally acknowledged style icon. No idea how that thought came into her head, particularly since to this day she has only officially styled one celebrity (singer Brandy), and the whole affair ended up in a court battle over a stolen credit card and rather a lot of missing money. Kim’s latest styling endeavor proves that this lovely lady isn’t afraid of playing in the big girls’ league, and in a video blog entry, the aspiring stylist and former sex tape protagonist raved about how she’d love to give Britney Spears a makeover.

Britney Spears is definitely one of the most controversial presences in today’s agitated world of showbiz entertainment – but a day to day life filled with mysterious drug use, manipulation, mental illness and legal troubles will not stand in the way of the former pop princess’ musical career – or what’s left of it anyway. As a result, Britney’s record label is about to release yet another single off Britney’s controversial "Blackout" album, as proof that despite all her troubles, Britney’s presence on the musical scene is undeniable. "Break the Ice" will thus benefit from an original, cartoon animated video featuring an anime-like superhero Britney.

Janet Jackson is back – well, we all know that, and how could we not know it since her eagerly anticipated album was set to be one of the most spectacular comebacks of the year. I said "was" because "Discipline" hit the shelves last week and it wasn’t the revelation everyone was hoping for. Don’t get me wrong - it’s not plain bad, but I dare say the world expected much better of Miz Janet, the diva who was rocking the dance floors all around the world some ten years back. Nevertheless, her new "Discipline" album still has some traces of the old Janet, mixed with some new up-tempo beats and interlaced with a lot of sexually explicit, barely-repressed feelings and moods. On the downside, though, Janet’s well-known breathy vocals are sometimes unnecessarily drowned in soulless beats that make "Discipline" a strange hybrid of old, very old and brand new. It’s up to you to decide if it works for you.

I have no idea which part is worse: the fact that Mariah Carey has a new song out, or the fact that a 45 second preview of its video has just been released and it’s absolutely hideous. It’s a tough choice, but I think I’ll go with the second one. You can watch the preview in question below and make up your own minds about it – but I would recommend an empty stomach and a bunch of Valium pills before hitting "play". OK, I may be overreacting a bit, but I find it beyond funny that a diva who is as pretentious and as annoyingly feisty as Mimi still believes that this kind of "magic of the eighties" video could still work. Maybe in an alternate reality or on a different planet – but even there I have my doubts. And yes, I know Mimi has a fondness for tight outfits and exposed midriffs, but still… there’s a limit to how much of this cheap "glitter" we can take.

Mariah Carey, ladies and gentlemen, has just dropped her new single called "Touch My Body" and what do you know? It’s all about sex. OK, that didn’t come out right – I mean, when you put it like that it doesn’t sound like it’s anything much, but in fact it is. I sit here listening to it and already, my mind is racing, trying to figure out whether there’s a way to actually figure out when Mariah last had sex.

The Grammys are over, the hackling is just beginning. It was only a matter of time before someone started to express anything from mild dislike to old-fashioned disapproval to blatant criticism. And the most obvious target for criticism this year was Amy Winehouse – quite an easy choice, considering the fact that she’s been battling a severe drug addiction and an equally troubled personal life. And yes, Amy did almost clean the house, winning five out of the six awards for which she was nominated and giving an excellent performance back in the UK, which was transmitted live via satellite to the States. However, there are many voices that criticized Amy as being a poor role model for the young generation – and not only.

Christina Aguilera sure is a sight for sore eyes these days. The singer, who gave birth to her son Max three weeks ago, is now coming back on the big stage – but baby steps is the way to go, and it’s nice to see Christina taking things slowly. Trouble is, it’s hard for the rest of us to keep our eyes off the singer, for two reasons: one is her face, and the other one is situates slightly below her face and is… ahem, staring us right in the face. I’m talking about her boobs, of course – which, as you can very well see in the photo, have never been bigger and have never quite been put on display like this. Not that I’m complaining – on the contrary, I’m happy we can see Christina up close and personal looking so… swell (pun intended) but at the same time I can’t help but worry about the poor kid.

The fact is, I was really wondering what would happen to Jennifer Lopez’s singing career now that she’s all Hollywood chic… that is, pregnant and stuff. I mean, we must admit she hasn’t had the best of luck in the professional department lately - her latest English language album "Brave" painfully failed to enter the U.S. Top Ten, coming in at #12, selling just 53.000 copies in its first week and then falling out of sight. To add insult to injury, her album lost to a collection of Christmas songs released in October and to Kid rock’s album Rock ‘N’ Roll Jesus. Talk about humiliation.
